SoulCare & Storywork

StoryWork

The story beneath the struggle matters. Beneath patterns of striving, shame, disconnection, anxiety, compulsive coping, or relational pain are deeper narratives that were formed in the places where life wounded the heart.

StoryWork is a guided process of slowing down, listening carefully, and making sense of the experiences, messages, and unmet longings that shaped your inner world, so those places can be reframed, reclaimed, and brought into healing.

What StoryWork is

Not just behavior change. Deeper healing.

StoryWork is the process of exploring the events, relationships, wounds, and internal narratives that have shaped how you relate to yourself, to others, and to God.

Many people know what they do. Far fewer understand why they do it. Often beneath overfunctioning, shutdown, emotional avoidance, shame, relational conflict, compulsive behaviors, or a chronic ache of not-enoughness is a deeper story that has never been clearly named.

In coaching, StoryWork helps uncover those hidden dynamics with honesty, curiosity, and compassion, so healing can reach deeper than surface solutions.

Questions we ask

The story beneath the surface

  • What happened in your story that shaped how you now cope, protect, perform, or withdraw?
  • What messages did your heart absorb in those moments?
  • What longing went unmet beneath that pain?
  • What protective strategies formed to help you survive?
  • Where are those old messages still shaping your present relationships and reactions?
  • What would it look like to reframe those places in truth, compassion, and health?
Why story matters

We do not live from logic alone.

We respond from memory, attachment, emotion, belief, nervous-system learning, and lived experience. The wounds in a person’s history often become the context from which present patterns make sense.

Attachment wounds

A lack of secure, consistent, attuned connection can leave the heart learning to brace, hide, strive, or attach in unhealthy ways. The ache for safety and connection does not disappear; it often simply shifts into other forms.

Core shame messages

Repeated pain can become internalized as identity: “I am not enough,” “I do not matter,” “I am too much,” “I must earn love,” or “I will never measure up.” StoryWork helps bring those messages into the light so they no longer silently drive the present.

Protective patterns

Many current behaviors began as attempts to manage pain, loneliness, fear, emptiness, or the ache of disconnection. Some people overperform. Some numb. Some seek control. Some hide. StoryWork helps interpret those patterns with truth and compassion.

Core frameworks

What we explore in StoryWork coaching

Core desires beneath the pattern +

Many unhealthy patterns sit on top of legitimate longings that have gone unmet or become distorted. In StoryWork, we often explore the deep desires beneath the behavior: the desire to be loved, safe, known, connected, purposeful, comforted, or physically held in healthy ways.

Rather than shaming those longings, we clarify them. We ask where they were left unmet, what false substitutes stepped in, and how those desires can be tended in healthier ways moving forward.

Broken attachment and relational wounds +

Early relationships shape how we expect closeness, safety, trust, and care to function. Where there was rejection, inconsistency, neglect, criticism, emotional absence, abuse, or chronic instability, the heart often learned to adapt.

StoryWork helps make sense of how those attachment experiences may still be influencing your reactions, fears, relationship patterns, and coping strategies today.

Identity wounds and internalized shame +

Pain that goes unnamed often becomes pain that gets interpreted. Over time, experiences can turn into narratives, and narratives can begin to feel like identity. Instead of “that hurt me,” a person starts to live from “this is who I am.”

StoryWork helps separate the wound from the person. It gives language to the messages that formed in pain so they can be challenged, reframed, and replaced with something truer.

Inner-child / exile dynamics +

Some parts of us still carry unresolved pain from earlier seasons of life. These younger, wounded places often hold loneliness, fear, shame, grief, or the ache of unmet need. They can become activated in the present, even when the original pain happened long ago.

In StoryWork coaching, we gently notice these exiled places, understand what they carry, and explore how protective patterns formed around them. The goal is not to condemn these responses, but to care for what has long been carrying pain.

The process

How StoryWork unfolds in coaching

StoryWork is not random introspection. It is a careful, guided process of helping someone feel safe enough to explore their story, understand what shaped them, and begin integrating new insight into daily life.

1

Engagement

We begin by creating a space of presence, safety, and attunement. Healing rarely starts where a person feels judged, rushed, or analyzed. It begins where they feel seen and received.

2

Exploration

Together we explore significant moments, relationships, recurring emotional patterns, family dynamics, losses, ruptures, and the places where pain began shaping meaning.

3

Extraction

We identify the themes beneath the story: repeated messages, unmet longings, symbolic patterns, emotional triggers, and the protective strategies that formed along the way.

4

Reflection

We slow down and listen for what the story is revealing. This creates language, self-awareness, and a deeper capacity to understand your reactions with honesty and compassion.

5

Integration

The goal is not simply insight. The goal is a more integrated way of living, where the story is no longer unconsciously controlling the present and new patterns can begin to emerge.

Why this approach matters

Healing happens in attuned presence.

StoryWork is

  • A compassionate process of making sense of the story beneath present patterns
  • A place to name wounds, shame messages, and unmet desires
  • A guided exploration rooted in safety, curiosity, and attunement
  • A movement toward reframing, reclaiming, and integrating what has been fragmented
  • A coaching environment that helps you understand your inner world more clearly

StoryWork is not

  • Endless introspection with no movement toward growth
  • Excusing destructive behavior or avoiding responsibility
  • Simple advice-giving or surface-level motivational talk
  • Reliving the past for its own sake
  • A quick fix that ignores the deeper why beneath the pattern
